Do You Need a Permit to Serve Alcohol at Your Louisiana Event?

Short answer: sometimes. Longer answer: it depends on one question most people never think to ask.

Is anyone selling the alcohol, or is it included in a ticket or admission price?

Here’s how it breaks down in Louisiana, in plain English.

Private party, no tickets, no sales

If you’re hosting a birthday, graduation, or backyard crawfish boil, you’re buying the alcohol yourself, and guests aren’t paying for drinks or for a ticket, you generally don’t need an event permit. It’s just a party.

Things get trickier when you add a bartender, a rented bar, or a third party who handles the booze. That’s where a lot of hosts get surprised, so check with your vendor before you book.

Tickets, cash bars, or drinks included in admission

This is where permits come in. Louisiana defines a special event as an event where alcohol is sold or included as part of an admission fee. Fundraisers, charity galas, ticketed festivals, and cash bars all fall in this bucket.

If that’s your event, someone needs an ATC permit for their brick & mortar location -and - an offsite catering permit to sell alcohol outside of that location OR a special event permit from the state’s Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC). A few things to know:

  • Each permit covers up to three consecutive days.

  • One person or organization can only get 12 per calendar year.

  • Apply early. Applications need paperwork, and some places want them well ahead of the event.

Nonprofits and organizers running one big event a year can handle this. It’s a hassle, but it’s doable. It gets painful when you’re running several events or you’ve never done it before.

What about a mobile bar?

This is the part nobody explains. A lot of mobile bars in Louisiana operate under one of two models:

  1. Dry hire. They bring the bar and the bartender. You buy and supply the alcohol.

  2. Permit by permit. They apply for a special event permit for each event, within that 12 per year limit.

Both work. Both come with homework for you.

Then there’s a third model: a mobile bar that holds its own ATC license and an offsite caterer’s permit, so it can legally supply and serve alcohol at your event without you doing any of it. That’s what Bar Rouler does.

What that actually means for you

When your bar vendor holds the right permits, here’s what you skip:

  • No liquor store runs

  • No guessing how many cases of wine 150 guests need

  • No reimbursements, receipts, or leftover bottles to haul home

  • No special event permit application for the bar

  • One vendor, one invoice

You still need to follow your venue’s rules and any local requirements for the event itself, but the alcohol side is handled.

Questions to ask any bar vendor before you book

Copy and paste these. Seriously.

  • Do you hold your own ATC license and offsite caterer’s permit, or will we need a special event permit?

  • Do you supply the alcohol, or do we?

  • Can you send proof of your permit and your insurance?

  • Do you carry liquor liability insurance, and will you add our venue as an additional insured?

A vendor who knows their stuff will answer these without blinking. If you get vague answers, keep shopping.

So, do you need a permit?

Quick cheat sheet:

  • Private party, no tickets, no sales: probably not, but confirm if you’re hiring a bartender.

  • Ticketed event, fundraiser, or cash bar: yes, someone needs an ATC permit and/or a special event permit. If the event is “open bar” but alcohol is included in the ticket price and the organization selling the tickets is not the ATC permit holder, a special event permit is needed regardless of who is hired to serve the alcohol.

  • No tickets, and hiring a mobile bar with its own ATC license and caterer’s permit: It’s handled.

Rules vary by parish and by venue, so always check with your venue and your local permit office. If you’re not sure where your event lands, just ask us.
