What to Ask Before Hiring a Mobile Bar for Your Wedding
Hiring a mobile bar sounds simple until you're three months out and realizing the company you booked doesn't actually have the permits to serve at your venue. Or their "bartender" isn't insured. Or they need you to buy and transport all the alcohol yourself.
It happens more than people realize in Louisiana. The mobile bar space has grown fast, and not everyone operating in it is fully licensed and set up to protect you if something goes wrong.
These questions take five minutes to ask. They can save you a massive headache on one of the most important days of your life.
The questions to ask every vendor
Are you a fully licensed and insured mobile bar service?
In Louisiana, serving alcohol at events requires specific licensing. If your vendor doesn't have it and something goes wrong, you as the client can be liable. Ask for proof. A legitimate operation will have no problem providing it.
Do you carry general liability and liquor liability insurance?
These are two different things. General liability covers property damage or injury. Liquor liability specifically covers incidents related to alcohol service. You want both. Some venues actually require proof of liquor liability before they'll allow a mobile bar on site.
What's actually included in your package?
Some services charge a flat fee and handle everything. Others quote you low and expect you to source, purchase, and transport all the alcohol and supplies. Get this in writing so there are no surprises on your budget.
Have you worked at my venue before, or are you familiar with its layout and rules?
Some venues have specific rules around alcohol service, load-in logistics, or designated bar areas. A vendor who knows the space (or takes time to learn it) will run a smoother event than someone showing up blind.
What happens if something goes wrong on the day?
Equipment breaks. Staff gets sick. Ask directly: do you have a backup plan? What's your cancellation or emergency policy? How many events have you staffed and has anything ever gone wrong? The answer matters less than whether they have a real answer at all.
Red flags to watch for
No proof of licensing or insurance when asked. This is a dealbreaker. Legitimate vendors don't hesitate on this.
Vague or verbal-only agreements. If the details aren't in a contract, they're not real.
No references, no reviews, no social presence. Everyone has a first event, but you probably don't want your wedding to be it.
You're expected to handle alcohol purchasing and transport. Not always a dealbreaker, but you need to know upfront. Sourcing alcohol for a 150-person wedding is a significant undertaking most couples don't plan for.
The best vendors in this space will welcome every one of these questions. It's how you separate the professional operations from everyone else.
